RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
